The Ahfad University Hostels Project
About the project
Many of the women studying at the Ahfad University for Women in Khartoum, Sudan, have no family support. Without this project, they would be forced to live in settlements on the outskirts of the city, with no electricity or running water, over two hours’ away.
The project has been running since 1998, in partnership with the Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund and the Ahfad University for Women.
Every year financial support and training is provided to four hostels, which enables accommodation to be provided to around 80 women. This ensures a safe environment, and one in which they can study properly. The hostels also offer a valuable and rare opportunity for women of different cultural backgrounds to mix – enhancing understanding between them and fostering important cross-cultural relations.
