Adolescent Girls’ Education in Crisis Initiative (AGENCI)

The very low number of girls and women enrolled in secondary school in South Sudan has been an under-addressed issue since the country’s independence in 2011. Girls and women between the ages of 10 and 24 face significant barriers to secondary education, and this is particularly the case for those living in hard-to-reach areas.

About the project

The Adolescent Girls’ Education in Crisis Initiative (AGENCI) project supports more young women and girls to attend and stay in school. We undertake a range of activities that supports girls, their families and communities through critical points in their education, helping to reduce the likelihood of them dropping out of education completely, and increasing the number who transition to the next level of education, or into vocational training or employment.

We provide life skills training and mentoring, we support the formation of school clubs and peer-to-peer groups, and we deliver community outreach activities like door-to-door support and radio talk shows.

AGENCI is a four-year (2020-2024) project funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and is implemented by Windle Trust International in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBG) and Western Equitoria (WES) states. It tackles gender, social, cultural and economic barriers faced by girls and young women in accessing education and making important life decisions, and improves equitable learning outcomes in secondary schools.
